LIMA, Peru, September 12, 2009 – USA held off a
Dominican Republic reaction in the fourth set
and advanced to the gold medal match at the II
Final Four Women’s Cup with a 25-20, 23-25,
25-23, 26-24 victory on Saturday at Eduardo
Dibos Coliseum.
The Americans appeared to be on their way to an
easy fourth set leading 20-12 when Dominican
Republic scored repeatedly to tie the score with
the strong and well located serves of Gina
Mambru and Jeoselyna Rodriguez both coming off
the bench.
Nancy Metcalf and Cynthia Barboza paced the
offense of United States with 13 points apiece
and Angela Pressey added 12. Dominican Bethania
de la Cruz had 23 points and Milagros Cabral
added 14.
“It was a well fought match with high level.
They created a lot of problems to us with their
serves and we need to work on our reception for
the final match. I am happy with the result,”
said Hugh McCutcheon, the USA coach.
“We defeated a great team with good personnel
and a high level. We must continue working with
our young players,” said veteran libero Stacy
Sykora of USA.
Marcos Kwiek, the coach of Dominican Republic,
stated: “We watched a well played match from
both sides. I think this is good because we all
know that in these months teams are changing
players and testing talent for the future.
Obviously I am not happy because we didn’t win.”
